YOUR FIRST PERIOD AFTER CHILDBIRTH

Image
For me the beauty of pregnancy was not having my period which I term the red  visitor. Over a year without my period was sheer bliss, however this was shortlived as the dreaded day arrived when the red visitor paid me an unwanted visit 6 months exactly after childbirth. With the way my son ate, I thought it would be at least up to a year before it returns but I was mistaken. It was heavier than my normal period and lasted up to a week. The red visitor did herald it's arrival as I was experiencing dull like cramps(the cramps intensified as my period approached)that spread from my lower abdomen to my back for almost 2 weeks before it came, I didn't want to believe that it could be the red visitor giving me advance notice of it's arrival rather I put it on working too hard, ,lifting heavy items and not getting enough rest. I sure wasn't happy to receive my red visitor but it's part of being woman, what can I say? Hmmmmmmm! what are the facts about your first p

HELPING YOUR INFANT TO DEAL WITH GAS

Image
A s a result of hyperlactating I was faced with the issue of foremilk and hindmilk imbalance (see post on the ABC of your baby's poop to see explanation on foremilk and hind milk imbalance) consequently my baby filled up on the foremilk which is high in lactose and this made him very gassy and fussy.when my breasts filled, I just kept feeding my baby in ignorance and the more he eats, the fussier he became and he showed colic like symptoms. As a concerned mum, I met a pediatrician and he simply dismissed it as colic and that there's nothing I can do till he outgrows it.  I wasn't satisfied with his diagnosis so I took to researching his symptoms online, different diagnosis popped up that made me assume the worst so I simply narrowed down and refined my search and good enough i came across the experiences of other mothers who faced the same situation I faced and coupled with further research, I realised he was fussy because of gas caused by my hyperlactating.  I ap

COPING WITH HYPERLACTATION (OVERSUPPLY)

Image
L ike most first time mothers, I didn't start to lactate immediately after childbirth and my baby yelled and yelled for his mother's milk.I was frustrated and worried about the delay and when finally my milk supply was established, I observed that I was producing more milk than my baby needs.  When I nurse I felt a tingling sensation and while my baby feeds on one end the other is dripping and my breast pads are soaked most of the time.nursing became difficult and uncomfortable especially for my baby as he became fussy, pulling away from the breast when I have a fast let down, he coughs, sputters and clamps down on my nipple during feedings in a bid to stop the fast flow.he also passes out greenish explosive stools as a result of foremilk and hindmilk imbalance (see post on ABC OF YOUR BABY'S POOP)  The last straw for me was when I was rushed to the hospital because of pain and fever resulting from breast engorgement. Even when I felt better, I still didn't know

HOW TO CONTROL EXCESSS WEIGHT GAIN IN PREGNANCY?

Image
Like I mentioned in my introduction, my weight increased steadily as I observed at each visit to the doctor. I freaked out over how I was going to loose the excess weight after pregnancy.I simply consoled myself with the thought that it was the only time in my life people will forgive me for adding weight, that however did not take the bite from people commenting that I'm fat or for others who fail to recognise me because of so much weight gain.  Before I became pregnant, I always wondered why women added so much weight during pregnancy and I ignorantly condemned them for eating so much but when it happened to me, I realised I was too quick in judging them and not everyone is like heidi klum or megan fox who could be heavily pregnant and still rock tight fitting dresses, the truth is that most women are like kim kardashian when pregnant.  On the bright side though, it's expected that you put on a certain amount of weight depending on how much you weigh before pregnan

MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF CARING FOR YOUR NEWBORN

After nine months of carrying extra pounds around, I couldn't wait to receive my little one into the world and to feel lighter (winks) but nothing prepared me for the sleepless nights ,crying and constant care I had to give to my baby.I'm not complaining because I love my baby very much but there were times when I felt I was going to loose it.  For me pregnancy was so much easier when compared to nursing and caring for a baby, for one, i became frustrated for not knowing why he was crying and how best to soothe him.It took me a little while to decode what each cry meant and how best to soothe him. Then came sleepness nights when I had to wake up 3 to 4 times to nurse him.By morning I was exhausted from lack of sleep and the list is endless.many of you my readers can relate to my experience but some of you may have had it easier.however what most first time mothers would want to hear is how can I cope with the challenges of caring for a newborn without loosing my mind? So fol

HOW TO UNDERSTAND YOUR BABY'S POOP

Image
As a first time mother, I was quite frightened when i saw my baby's first poop which was greenish black. This is referred to as meconium, your baby's first poop is this colour as a result of the amniotic fluid and all he's ingested in his mother's womb.My little one's poop gradually changed to a yellowish and seedy poop, there were times when it turned green too.O the shades of my baby's poop!   So what is the colour of your baby's poop and what do they mean?Though talking about poop may seem like a messy business, it's important mothers pay attention to their baby's poop so they would know when to panic and when not to when they see the changing texture and colour of their baby's poop.so follow me as I decode the colour and texture of a baby's poop. GREEN BLACK:This is the colour of your baby's first poop, otherwise known as meconium.this is made up of mucus and amniotic fluid and everything your baby took in while in your womb.

THE SAFEST SLEEPING POSITION DURING PREGNANCY

Image
A s  my tummy grew bigger, it became increasingly hard to get a comfy position to sleep as my favourite position to sleep was on my back, however i couldn't do that because according to research, it's not safe to sleep on your back because the weight of your uterus rests on your spine and major blood vessels as such it can block out oxygen supply to your baby and aggravate back pains, cause blood pressure to drop which in turn can lead to dizziness.     It is thus advised that you sleep on your side preferably your left side because it boosts blood flow and could help in reducing swelling in the legs(this doesn't mean you can't sleep on your right side).    Tossing and turning in a bid to get a comfortable position to sleep is what contributes to insomnia in pregnancy,so to get comfy while sleeping, you can get yourself a pregnancy pillow that is designed to provide sleep comfort while you're pregnant. It addresses the sleeping position problem associa

HOW TO PREVENT SAGGING BREASTS?

Image
S ome well meaning people have told me not nurse my baby for too long as this could lead to sagging breasts.hmmmm! Is that really true? Can breastfeeding lead to sagging breast?  According to research, pregnancy not breastfeeding is the real culprit for sagging breast . This is because during pregnancy, the ligaments that supports your breast may stretch as your breast gets fuller and heavier. It is this stretching that leads to sagging during pregnancy. It is not so obvious during pregnancy because your breast is full but once you finish nursing and the milk is no longer there to plump it up, a more sagging breast is noticed as such most people blame breastfeeding for sagging breasts.  Do not lose hope, there are some tips you can follow to maintain perky breast and prevent sagging. 1.wear supportive bra.wear a bra that best provides support for your breast as they increase in size 2.keep your weight under control during pregnancy.excess weight leads to more stretch

INTRODUCTION

Still fresh in my mind like it was yesterday is how the journey of motherhood began for me.it started with two lines on the pregnancy test stick that showed I was pregnant, in no time morning sickness began; the number on the scales were going up with each doctor's appointment ( bye bye to " lepa " ) my little one began kicking like he was playing a football match; as my baby bump grew, sleeping became difficult as I coudn't find a comfortable position to sleep,To cut the long story short, ,I'll fast forward as it were to the D day - LABOUR, hmmm! It was truly an experience as I pushed my little one into the world and he gave a loud cry to announce his arrival, i felt like a ton of load has been lifted off me.    The journey, however continues as I transitioned into the phase of nursing my baby, yet again, this stage presented it's own hurdles, breastfeeding challenges, positions,l sleeplesss nights e.t.c How I wished babies came with manuals to
